Navigating the Secondary Market: Vera Bradley Product Tags
Navigating the secondary market for Vera Bradley means knowing how to read the tag sewn into the bag. Retired florals and paisleys were often produced for short runs, and the product tag logo is your most reliable timestamp.
At Curious Kitties' Collectibles, Ray and I use an accurate tag progression system to properly date every piece we source and distinguish retail designs from outlet-exclusive lines. This guide fixes the dates you see in most viral graphics.
The Evolution of the Vera Bradley Product Tag Logo
1. Early Script Era (1982 – 1986)
Design: Natural white woven tag reading Vera Bradley Designs Indiana in brown script lettering.
Details: Unbranded standard metal zipper pulls; early small diamond argyle quilting. All USA-made. This is the original incorporation era - handbag, sports bag, and duffel bag.
2. Floral Bouquet Era (1986 – 1995)
Design: White woven tag featuring a distinct hand-painted floral bouquet motif above black script Vera Bradley.
Details: Finished ribbon edges on tags; classic vintage fabrications and the first border prints.
3. Block Letter Era (1995 – 2004)
Design: All-caps dark forest green text reading VERA BRADLEY DESIGNS alongside a small stylized flower icon on a tan background.
Details: Transition from metal to plastic ribbed zipper pulls with "VB" embossing near the end of the run; shift to elongated diamond quilting.
4. Classic Cursive Ribbon Era (2004 – 2017)
Design: Bright kelly green ribbon-style tag featuring the iconic slanted gold cursive signature sewn into the side seam.
Details: This marks the 2004 online expansion and logo modernization, covering the peak boom years of retired patterns. Paired with plastic ribbed pulls or engraved metal oval pulls, and coordinating floral or geometric interior prints.
5. Title-Case Refresh Era (2017 – 2024)
Design: Clean, modern title-case label reading Vera Bradley in a serif/sans wordmark on solid navy tags.
Details: Sleek metal pull tabs with laser-etched signatures; fabric content and care details printed on interior white tags.
6. Modern Era & Outlet (2024 – Present) – Project Restoration / Project Sunshine
Design: Minimalist lowercase wordmark vera bradley on dark navy, outlet versions reading vera bradley Factory Outlet.
Details: Lowercase branding was introduced in July 2024 under Project Restoration — a modernization that added new silhouettes and solid colors. In January 2025, the strategy was replaced by Project Sunshine, which kept the same lowercase tag but returned the product mix to classic cotton DNA, archival floral prints, and joyful patterns. Project Sunshine also includes an Outlet 2.0 initiative.
Vera Bradley Factory Outlet Tags vs. Mainline Retail
Vera Bradley operates dedicated Factory Outlet locations that feature both discounted retail stock and outlet-exclusive collections. Outlet-exclusive styles are not "fakes" — they are made-for-outlet — but they are constructed differently.
1. The "Factory" Text Marker: Modern (2024+) outlet-exclusive pieces explicitly feature Vera Bradley Factory Outlet on the interior woven product tag and "Outlet Exclusive" on the paper hang tag, rather than the standard retail wordmark. Be careful with outlet stores because they sell their “factory exclusive” items here and quality is a little lower than regular stores.
2. Interior Tag Construction: Retail bags typically have a detailed woven content tag. Outlet-exclusive bags frequently pair the woven Factory Outlet main tag with a simplified plain white printed square care tag inside.
3. Style Number Note: Collectors have observed that outlet-exclusive styles often have different style number prefixes on care tags from 2010 onward. This is an anecdotal pattern, not an official Vera Bradley rule, as modern SKUs are now 10-digit (e.g., Outlet Vera Tote SKU# 5337923028). Use it as a clue, not a verdict — look for the "Outlet Exclusive" wording and Factory Outlet tag as confirmation.
4. Hardware & Lining Differences: The only exception is some of the outlet-specific "Factory" styles, which sometimes use a simpler satin or solid-color lining to keep costs down instead of intricate coordinating floral prints, alongside simplified smooth metal zipper pulls without complex laser etching.
Because third-party sellers on marketplaces often list "New Old Stock" or even outlet-exclusive items alongside retail pieces, checking these markers is essential.
How We Authenticate Retired Pieces at Curious Kitties
1. Check the Product Tag First:
Take photos of the front and back of the main tag. Match the logo style to the correct era above and check for a "Factory Outlet" designation. On bags from 2008 onward, check the small white care tag inside for the style code and production season stamp (e.g., SP16 for Spring 2016, or a month/year code).
2. Inspect the Hardware:
1980s–1990s: Unbranded basic metal slide pulls
2000s–2010s: Plastic ribbed pulls embossed with "VB" or engraved metal oval pulls
Modern Eras: Sleek metal pulls with laser-etched branding on retail; smooth solid pulls on outlet
3. Verify Pattern & Quilting:
Authentic Vera Bradley cotton bags feature clean, elongated diamond argyle stitching rather than flat, loose squares. Interior coordinate linings help pin down the exact release window and distinguish retail runs from outlet releases.
