Designer Diary #1: Building the Feline Mind — The Six Stats of Paws & Parchment

When designing Paws & Parchment, traditional tabletop RPG attribute arrays like Strength, Intelligence, and Wisdom fell short. Feline adventurers do not experience the world through human paradigms; they navigate danger, magic, and mystery through instinct, speed, and environmental intuition.

To capture this, we built a custom 6-stat attribute array tailored specifically to how cats perceive, interact with, and conquer their environment.

The Six-Stat Array

🐾 CLAW

What It Measures: Physical strike power, tearing, and muscle leverage

In-Game Application: Landing melee attacks, climbing sheer masonry, and forcing jammed doors.

💨 ZOOMIES

What It Measures: Raw burst speed, acceleration, and reflex reaction time

In-Game Application: Winning initiative, dodging trap pounces, and sprinting across open courtyards.

🖤 GUT

What It Measures: Tenacity, stamina, and psychological resilience

In-Game Application: Resisting poison, enduring harsh alley winters, and standing firm against terrifying hounds.

🔍 CURIOSITY

What It Measures: Investigative keenness, puzzle-solving, and arcana detection

In-Game Application: Uncovering hidden wall panels, deciphering arcane symbols, and noticing tiny details.

👂 WHISKER

What It Measures: Spatial awareness, vibration tracking, and environmental intuition

In-Game Application: Detecting invisible threats in the dark, sensing sudden air pressure drops before traps spring.

What It Measures: Social sway, charm, and emotional resonance

In-Game Application: Calming agitated tavern keepers, intimidating alley rivals, and rallying party members.
